Peter Taylor To Manage The Legends

We are delighted to be able to announce that ex-England caretaker manager Peter Taylor will be taking charge of the Southend United Legends side on Sunday 17th May.

Peter Taylor, who was born on 03/01/1953, came through as an apprentice at Southend United. Whilst with the Club, he was part of the side that secure promotion to the Old Third Division. His form attracted the interest of Crystal Palace. They spent £110K in October 1973 to lure him to Crystal Palace. Whilst with the Club, “Spud” as he was also know as, went on to make 59 starts, with a further 19 appearances coming from the bench. He scored 13 goals from midfield. Peter also played for Crystal Palace, Tottenham Hotspur, Leyton Orient, Oldham Athletic (Loan), Exeter City, Maidstone United, Chelmsford City and Dartford.

Peter then moved into management. He spent a spell as Dartford player-manager before getting his big break at Southend United following the departure of Barry Fry. He was in charge for 84 games, winning 27 drawing 16 and losing 41. In November 2000, Peter Taylor was named caretaker manager of the England National side. His oversaw the 1-0 defeat away to Italy, but the game was more famously remembered as David Beckham’s first game as England captain. Peter also managed Dover Athletic, England Under 21s (Twice), Gillingham (Twice), Leicester City, England (Caretaker), Brighton & Hove Albion, Hull City, Crystal Palace, Stevenage Borough, Wycombe Wanderers, Bradford City, Bahrain and England Under 20’s.
